How to Hang Your Wall Art

The exact installation method depends on the frame size, wall material, and weight of the piece, so this guide will help you choose the safest and most suitable way to display your artwork.

Before You Start

Before installing your wall art, make sure you have:

• Confirmed the final position
• Measured the wall
• Checked the frame dimensions
• Identified the wall material
• Selected appropriate hanging hardware
• Checked for electrical wiring or plumbing before drilling

For larger frames, having a second person available can make positioning and installation much easier.

Step 1 — Choose the Right Position

Start by deciding exactly where you want the artwork.

Consider:

• Furniture placement
• Wall width
• Ceiling height
• Viewing distance
• Nearby doors and windows
• Other artwork in the room

Avoid placing the artwork too close to the ceiling or directly against surrounding furniture.

A little breathing space around the frame usually creates a cleaner and more intentional look.

Step 2 — Measure Before Hanging

Measure the available wall area and identify the centre point of the space.

If the artwork is being placed above furniture, use the furniture as your visual reference.

For example:

• Centre artwork above a sofa
• Centre artwork above a bed or headboard
• Align artwork with a desk or console
• Keep spacing consistent within multi-frame arrangements

Use a pencil to lightly mark the intended hanging position.

Step 3 — Identify Your Wall Type

Different walls require different hanging methods.

Common wall types include:

• Concrete
• Brick
• Cement/plaster
• Drywall or gypsum board
• Wooden walls or panels
• Tiled surfaces

If you are unsure about your wall material, consult an experienced installer before drilling.

Concrete, Brick & Solid Walls

For solid masonry walls, a wall plug and screw or appropriate masonry nail is generally the safest option.

You may need:

• Drill
• Masonry drill bit
• Wall plug
• Screw
• Measuring tape
• Spirit level

Larger frames may require stronger anchors or multiple fixing points.

Drywall / Gypsum Board

Do not rely on a standard nail alone for heavier pieces on drywall.

Use suitable:

• Drywall anchors
• Wall plugs
• Toggle anchors
• Fixings rated for the expected weight

Whenever possible, mounting into a wall stud provides additional support.

Wooden Walls

For wooden surfaces, an appropriate screw or strong picture-hanging hardware may be sufficient.

Always make sure the fixing is securely anchored into the wood rather than only a thin decorative layer.

Smaller Frames

Smaller IBRELIA frames can generally be installed using a simple secure wall fixing suitable for the wall type.

Before hanging:

• Confirm the fixing is secure
• Make sure the frame sits properly
• Check that the artwork is level

Do not use weak adhesive products unless they are specifically rated for the weight and wall surface.

Larger Frames

For A1, A0, Ultra-Wide, large square, or custom-sized wall art, additional support may be required.

Depending on the wall and frame size, we may recommend:

• Stronger wall anchors
• Multiple fixing points
• Professional installation
• Assistance from a second person

Larger artwork should never be hung from hardware that is not designed to support its weight.

Hanging Above a Sofa

For artwork above a sofa:

• Centre the artwork relative to the sofa
• Keep the composition visually connected to the furniture
• Avoid placing the frame too high
• Make sure the artwork does not extend awkwardly beyond the furniture width

For wide sofas, Ultra-Wide wall art, diptychs, triptychs, or Gallery Wall Sets may work particularly well.

Hanging Above a Bed

When installing wall art above a bed:

• Centre it relative to the bed or headboard
• Make sure all fixings are secure
• Use suitable anchors for heavier pieces
• Avoid unstable installation methods

Because artwork above a bed is positioned directly over people, secure mounting is especially important.

Hanging Above a Desk or Console

Position the artwork so it feels connected to the furniture below it.

A frame placed too high can look disconnected from the desk or console.

Smaller and medium-sized artworks can usually sit closer to the furniture than large statement pieces.

Installing Diptychs & Triptychs

For multi-piece artwork, planning is especially important.

Before drilling:

1. Lay the complete set on the floor.
2. Confirm the correct artwork order.
3. Decide the spacing between frames.
4. Measure the total width of the complete arrangement.
5. Mark the centre of the full composition on the wall.
6. Work outward from the centre.

Keep spacing consistent between each frame.

Installing a Gallery Wall

For larger Gallery Wall Sets, we recommend planning the complete arrangement before making any holes.

You can:

• Arrange frames on the floor first
• Measure the complete layout
• Use paper templates
• Mark frame positions with removable tape
• Photograph the planned arrangement for reference

Once you are satisfied with the layout, begin installing one frame at a time.

Use a Spirit Level

Even a slightly tilted frame can be noticeable.

After installation, use a spirit level or leveling app to check that the artwork is sitting straight.

For multi-frame sets, check both the individual frames and the overall alignment.

Can I Use Adhesive Strips?

Adhesive hanging strips may work for some lightweight applications, but their performance depends heavily on:

• Wall surface
• Paint quality
• Humidity
• Product rating
• Frame weight

IBRELIA does not recommend relying on generic adhesive tape for heavier wall art.

If you use adhesive hanging products, always follow the manufacturer's weight and surface instructions carefully.

For larger frames, mechanical wall fixings are generally safer.

Avoid These Installation Mistakes

Do not:

• Hang heavy artwork from weak nails
• Use ordinary tape
• Install into damaged plaster
• Guess where electrical wiring may be located
• Hang large artwork from a single inadequate fixing
• Force the frame onto unstable hardware
• Allow the frame to rest partially unsupported
• Drill without confirming the wall is safe

After Installation

Once your frame is on the wall:

• Check that it is secure
• Make sure it is level
• Ensure it does not move excessively
• Confirm that the hanging point is properly engaged
• Step back and check the overall positioning

If the artwork feels unstable, remove it and improve the fixing before displaying it permanently.
